Labib Rahman aiming to raise £2,000 for ‘Rochdale Science Extravaganza’

Labib Rahman and his father, Mohammed, are aiming to raise £2,000 for a science ‘extravaganza’ at Wardleworth Community Centre on 18 March.

Last year Labib, aged just ten-years-old, organised a fun-filled family ‘science fair’ at the community centre, which was attended by hundreds of excited adults and children.

The day was packed with science-related shows and experiments such as rocket explosions, creating slime and fizzy drinks, a planetarium plus a live wildlife mini zoo, bouncy castles, food stalls and a presentation by Labib about fossils.

This year, the youngster hopes to make the day even bigger and better, with a larger planetarium, two rock pools with marine rangers, and a mobile science lab for individual science experiments to be carried out.

Labib, who counts palaeontology amongst one of his favourite areas of science, even hopes to build his own ‘dinosaur dig’ where each person can exhume their own dinosaur to keep, with a palaeontologist to explain everything about dinosaurs and fossils.

The day came about because of the enthusiastic child’s love of everything science. Labib wanted to hold a science related event because “it is miles to travel to Manchester or Birmingham, so why not do something in my town?”

The extravaganza will fall during British Science Week (10-19 March), a ten-day programme of science, technology, engineering and maths events and activities across the UK for people of all ages.

The project is already part-funded thanks to a £500 award from the British Science Association, plus a pledge of £1,050.
