Rochdale Summer Science Extravaganza 2019
25 August 2019
The Summer Science Extravaganza was a fantastic family day filled with fun science activities. It showcased the diverse world of science with various stalls, workshops, and talks.
The event was taken over by the 'Rochdale's got Science Talent' show, which was a program by local young people. It was organized at the Kashmir Youth Project.
Families had a chance to explore the universe in a 360° VR planetarium and closely meet the Dippy Skull with the Dippy on tour Rochdale team.
There was also a chance to see Kakou's robots. Our PhD student, Hasina Begum, led a lot of experiment-based activities. She presented a sound haptic device that works with sound and touch for computer use. Divya, a recent Leeds University graduate, guided families through a variety of fun, do-it-yourself science activities.
But there was more! Zoo2U brought a collection of exotic animals. Fun-Science put on a complete science show and set up a science experiment stand. Aqualease Rock pools marine-rangers presented a hands-on experience with marine life such as Mussels, Crabs, Blennies, and Starfish.
Katherine Platt, the regional manager of the Institute of Physics, kindly organized physics experiments, crafts, space-themed stories, and games for everyone to enjoy. The Science and Industry Museum set up hands-on activities, experiments, and displays, creating a true celebration of Science and Engineering.
